6 Common CBD Myths

There’s a lot of information about Cannabidiol, also known as CBD out there these days. It is widely considered one of the most popular health trends ever and has even been touted as the new “miracle drug”. There’s no doubt that CBD is big business and with it comes some CBD Myths.

So sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between the valuable information and the hype and fake news. It is no wonder there is a lot of confusion. So let’s help set the record straight about some common CBD myths and misconceptions regarding cannabinoids.

So what exactly is CBD and what are some of the common CBD myths?


CBD is one of over 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. It is the second next most prominent cannabinoid after THC but unlike THC which makes you feel “stoned”, CBD doesn’t create a “high”.

1. CBD is non – psychoactive

This is a really popular misconception and can be very misleading. So what is the real truth? What people actually mean when they use the term non – psychotic is that CBD is non – intoxicating. But it IS actually psychoactive.

There’s a crucial difference between a “psychoactive” substance and an “intoxicating” substance. To be intoxicated means that a person will have his or her cognitive abilities affected. That’s why driving under the influence of alcohol is so dangerous.

On the other hand, psychoactive substances have an effect on the mind or psyche. Caffeine is a classic example of a non – intoxicating psychoactive substance. Most people can drink coffee safely and still complete complex tasks. In fact it can help increase their focus and alertness.

A chemical is thought to be psychoactive when it acts on the central nervous system and changes brain function causing temporary changes in behaviour, mood or perception. So while CBD doesn’t have the same stimulating effect as THC, it will still affect your central nervous system so it might make you feel more relaxed or less anxious. But you definitely won’t feel stoned or high. So taking CBD can have a calming effect on the mind which would be considered psychoactive but non – intoxicating.

2. CBD is sedating

Early studies of the effects of CBD suggested that it was sedating but this isn’t really true. More recent studies have shown that it can actually be ‘alerting’. So where does all this confusion come from?

Well it really depends on the dose taken. In small or moderate doses, CBD tends to have an alerting affect but if very high doses are taken some people find that it can be sleep – promoting, not by making the person tired but by reducing stress and anxiety.

This is due to the fact that CBD rich cannabis flowers contain a compound called myrcene which has soothing and pain – killing properties. This is why CBD can be a really good ally in overcoming insomnia. Research has shown that CBD affects serotonin receptors which causes our bodies to release endocannabinoids , our own naturally produced endocannabinoid system which regulates functions like sleep. So even though CBD doesn’t make you sleepy, it helps our bodies regulate sleep.

3. CBD is medical. THC is recreational

This isn’t actually true and demonises THC as “bad”when in actual fact both cannabinoids have a lot to offer. While THC is known as the mind – altering substance that gets you high, it also has wonderful therapeutic properties such as soothing nausea, treating pain, reducing inflammation. A number of studies have shown THC to be effective in reducing the side effects for cancer sufferers. This is also true for CBD.

Some research suggests in fact that CBD and THC medical benefits are more effective when used together. Studies have found that they interact to complement each others therapeutic affect. This is known as the “entourage effect” a term used first by Raphael Mechoulam, a highly regarded cannabis researcher from Isreal. Research carried out at the California Pacific Medical Centre in San Francisco found that a combination of CBD and THC proved more powerful on treating tumours in brain and breast cancer patients than when tested alone.

CBD also treats pain and reduces inflammation and it also has the potential to treat depression and anxiety. While it’s not seen as recreational, some recreational users of THC will look for products with higher strains of CBD as reduces the intensity of the experience and and enables them ti enjoy a more relaxed “high”.

4. CBD is CBD – Quality doesn’t matter

The demand for CBD products is increasing more and more as people are becoming familiar with the natural wellness benefits and uses of the the product. So you might be wondering if all CBD oils the same? The answer is no. This is like saying that all caffeine sources are the same. But as all coffee lovers know, there is a big difference between a great cup of a coffee and a cup of tea.

So the same goes for CBD – the quality between CBD products varies a lot between manufacturers. CBD oils from different plant sources can ofter contain very different molecules. So this means that different oils can affect your body in extremely different ways. Again using the caffeine example, most people know that our bodies react differently to coffee, tea or energy drinks.

So, as the market expands to take advantage of the demand for the product, it is more important than ever to buy from a trusted source of high quality CBD oil. Industrial hemp contains far less cannabinoil than high resin CBD – rich flower tops. Massive amounts of industrial hemp are needed to extract modest amounts of CBD. 5. High doses work better than low doses

When it comes to CBD, less is sometimes more. The amount that you take should depend on a number of factors including your body weight, your metabolism, the condition that you are treating as well as the concentration of CBD in the product that you are taking.

The best advise is to start with a small dosage and increase slowly until you reach the desired effect. Bear in mind also that CBD has a biphasic on your body which means high and low doses can can produce opposite effects. What this actually means is that every person who consumes CBD has their own biological pathway which means that their responses to the product may differ. For example with alcohol, which is also biphasic, some people may feel the effects after only consuming one alcoholic beverage while the next person could drink for the entire evening and appear fine.

This basically puts the onus on you, the consumer of CBD to monitor how you respond to different amounts. This is the only way to ensure that you get adequate relief from your symptoms. So start low and go slow.

6. CBD is addictive

Because CBD doesn’t produce the same high associated with THC, it is not addictive nor does it produce the stoned effect THC does. The substance in the cannabis plant that does have addictive properties is THC and CBD oils do not contain enough THC to to get someone stoned or cause them to become addicted.

Researchers have found that high doses of CBD up to 1500mg a day were well tolerated by humans. CBD did not effect their motor or psychological functions nor did it alter their blood pressure or heart rate.

Some research has suggested that CBD oil might actually be a useful way to help treat substance abuse. This is BECAUSE CBD is non – addictive and non – intoxicating. But its healing properties can genuinely ease cravings as well as help reduce the anxiety experienced by those suffering from addiction.

So where does that leave us?

Due to marijuana’s historical prohibition, clinical research on CBD is fairly new. But results from ongoing research has shown CBD to be a safe and effective treatment for many health conditions.

It’s also important to note that the therapeutic process can take weeks if not months. So don’t expect too much too soon.
